FAQs
What is neurodiversity and neurodivergence?
Great question! Neurodiversity is the belief that ALL of our brains are made and process information and sensory input differently.
Someone is considered neurotypical when they lack any of the processing styles that are associated with specific neurotypes.
Neurotypes are groupings of behaviors, symptoms, or ways of processing information that often become diagnostic criteria for medical diagnoses. For example, there is an autistic neurotype, a dyslexic neurotype, an ADHD neurotype, an anxiety neurotype, etc. Some neurotypes are considered developmental and present from birth. Other neurotypes can be acquired, such as PTSD or traumatic brain injuries.
Neurodivergence is when someone has one or more neurotypes that lead to sensory information processing out of the neurotypical realm.

How did you choose the business name?
This is a fun one! The founder of The Nature of Neurodiversity has always loved being in nature, being at camp, and even had dreams of working at a camp for children with special needs when she was younger.
Fast forward to adult OT life, and the founder now understands the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors. In her role as a pediatric occupational therapist, the founder has always had a passion for serving the neurodivergent. When creating a new business, the two passions joined beautifully to create The Nature of Neurodiversity.
This name also lends itself well to the education and advocacy aspects of the business that teach others about the abstract nature of neurodiversity.
Why are you saying “autistic” instead of “person with autism”?
Simply put, that’s what the adult autistic community has said they prefer. Neurodivergence & autism are seen as a piece of their identity & integral to how they interpret and interact with the world. It is not something they can be separated from. Therefore, they do not “have autism”; they “are autistic.” This same philosophy holds for many (if not all) neurodivergences.
Do you only help autistic individuals and families?
Absolutely not!
Who is your perfect client?
Though we love EVERYONE, we’re not the perfect fit for everyone. We specialize in working with neurodivergent children, tweens, teens, and adults. Our goal is to help the older neurodivergent population gain an understanding of themselves and their senses to aid in self-advocacy. In some instances (such as trauma), we can be the right fit, even for younger children. Reach out if you think pairing nature and occupational therapy will be the right fit for your family.
What insurance do you accept?
We are currently out of network with all private insurance. We understand occupational therapy is an investment, so we want to help you in any way we can.
In addition to traditional payment methods, payments can be made using Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) cards. Additionally, we can provide a super-bill to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
We are an approved ESA+ provider through the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.
We acknowledge the privilege that comes with being able-bodied and financially stable. Because of that, we aim to provide occasional no-cost programming and/or services when possible.
